Ever since Sophia Amoruso’s brilliant book hit the shelves, the internet has been abuzz with tips and tricks to master the art of being a #GirlBoss. Unfortunately, it cannot be grasped in a day or even in a year. In order to achieve the coveted status, you must inculcate certain habits which will help you become the best version of yourself. No matter who you are, where you are from or what you do, here are five traits that you must have in order to own the world:
The Art of Knowing Thyself
The first step to becoming a full-fledged #GirlBoss is to know yourself, inside and out. To tap into all of that potential which is bursting to show itself, you must be aware of what you know and more importantly, of what you don’t know. You have to understand your strengths well enough to use them to your advantage, and conquer your weaknesses before they spread too far. If you are still in the process of figuring it out, don’t sweat it! Life is nothing but a long journey to discover this very simple truth. Don’t worry about it, you’ll get there!
The Art of Organization
First things first: head on over to the closest stationery store and snap up a pretty little organizer for yourself – this little black (or pink) book is going to become your lifeline in the days to come. Make daily to-do lists. Schedule every appointment, meeting, luncheon, conference call and errand, taking great pleasure as you tick things off. Be smart about planning your day, such that you complete brain intensive activities in the first half, when you are fresh and ready to take the world by a storm. You will find that your efficiency levels are the highest before lunch. Other mundane activities like clearing your inbox, paying the bills and cleaning your desk space can be taken care of in the latter half.
The Art of Effective Communication
As a #GirlBoss, you need to be able to connect with those around you, whether they are employees, colleagues or friends. Learn to communicate emphatically – this is the difference between a keynote by Steve Jobs and one by Tim Cook. Most people like to believe that they are part of something larger so uses phrases that inspire, not inform. Get personal. Above all, remember that communication is a two way street, ladies! Sometimes, you just have to shut up and listen.
The Art of Asking Questions
Can I tell you a secret? Most of us do not ask enough questions because we are scared; scared to question authority, to question the norm, to question ourselves. How can you expect to break out of the monotony, implement that brilliant business idea or write that world-changing book without knowing more than you already do? Glamour girls, understand the power of a well-placed question, a humble disagreement and standing up for what you believe in. Use it.
The Art of Unplugging
In this fast paced world, you will often find yourself caught in a whirlpool of gadgets, applications and social networks. Every #GirlBoss knows the importance unplugged, alone time. You will find that when your mind is clear and undistracted, you will come up with the best business ideas and solutions to problems which have been plaguing you for days. Create a ritual around your “me-time” – I like to brew up some ginger root tea, lay out on my hammock in the shade with a good read while the feeling of the warm sun and the sound of nature soothes my soul. Give it a shot. You are welcome.
