HAIR HACK ALERT! I’ve been in the hair business for a very long time, and one of the main questions we receive is, “How do I prevent shedding and make my hair last longer?” I’ve tested many methods and products that claim to help the hair reach its maximum longevity, but the hair hacks I’m about to share with you work THE BEST.
Whether you purchase a GHOH lace wig, closure piece, or weft extensions sealing your hair will give you more longevity and wear with your hair. For wigs and closures each strand of hair is hand-tied and secured by a knot on the underside of the hairpiece. Because this tiny knot holds each strand into place, the hair is very delicate—and can often shed. To ensure longevity beyond the normal wear and tear of your new style, begin sealing the individual knots with a product called Patricia Nimocks Acrylic Matte Sealer. This is indeed a hair hack ladies, and you are highly unlikely to find this product in your beauty supply store, because it’s actually an arts & craft product. So visit your local crafts store, Target or Wal-Mart and you’ll likely see this handy hair hack hidden within the crafts isle.
Make sure you get the matte version of this sealer, because you don’t want to add additional shine under your hair piece. Once you have the sealer in hand, spray it on the underside of your hair piece and you’ll create a coating around the knot that provides an extra layer of protection for the hair. This will make your tresses more durable and prevent them from sliding loose.
Also handle your closure or wig gently! I cannot stress this enough. I personally have rubbed so many holes in my pieces in the past by handling my pieces roughly. Scratching, pulling when styling, and glue, and the cleaning of the glue from the piece is very stessful on the delicate knots that are holding the strand to the lace/silk lace base.
For sealing your wefts (or bundles, you want to use a weft sealer (located at your beauty supply store, or google “weft sealer”). Remember that our top-quality hair is hand-sewn in place. Because the hair is literally being held together by a thread, it’s understandable that the hairs can easily slide out. Again, a weft sealer will help you maintain more of your tresses.
Apply the sealer prior to having your hair sewn in. Also, make sure you are getting your GHOH bundles sewn in by a stylist who does not sew through wefts. Many do not, however many still do. So ask your stylist, and if she/he says yes, they do—understand the installation method may actually be making your hair shed.
Lastly, understand that your hair will shed a little when it comes out of the package, because it’s freshly wefted. Expect a little shedding on your first wash—that’s normal. (Check out my previous post about how to care for your new hair.)
3 Tips to Prevent Shedding
- Sewing around wefts
- Refrain from cutting your wefts during installation. Use the fold over method, instead.
We’ve received a few questions from ladies about the first steps to take when their new hair arrives, so we’re starting a Tress Talk blog series to help you out. Watch the video below to learn more and read our tips that follow!
When you first get your Glamour House of Hair extensions, you should wash them first. The hair is created in a factory, which means various soaps are used to cleanse and condition the hair prior to us shipping it out to you. There may be some residue on your bundles when they come straight out of the package. So you want to co-wash your hair. This means that you’ll wash and rinse your hair with a moisture-rich conditioner and water (not shampoo).
Hair doesn’t need shampoo, unless you’ve used a lot of product on the hair, and it will not need shampoo if it’s new. (If you decide to wash your hair with shampoo down the line, use a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo.) Sulfate is a soaping agent that is harmful for the hair. It’s used in dishwasher liquid, car wash and other detergents. Your sulfate-free shampoo may not sud up as much, but suds do not equal clean—suds equal stripping. A sulfate-free shampoo will prevent stripping. Try to substitute shampoo for a moisture-rich conditioner, whenever possible.
After you wash your extensions, always let your hair air dry if you can. Our virgin extensions will be beautiful right away, but for optimal results, air drying is best.

What is the true meaning of freedom? Does God exist? Can wealth be measured by something greater than money? How does one achieve success without stress? Let it be said that crossing the finish line of this journey we call life is no easy feat. Along the way, you will find yourself dealing with some evasive questions and you will probably feel like you are losing your mind until you have the right answer. Whilst nobody can provide hard and fast answers to these perplexing questions (life is an equation of the unknowns after all!), wise men like Ralph Smart can make these issues seem less intimidating and more approachable.
Ralph is what you might refer to as a YouTube “guru” – check out his channel, Infinite Waters. Apart from being my daily dose of inspiration, Ralph is also a psychologist, author, counselor, radio host, cinematographer, researcher, graphic designer and self-proclaimed “infinite being.” No kidding! One thing that stands out about Ralph is the fact that he does not preach as you would expect a typical life coach to. Instead, he encourages you to put the light back into your heart and soul, and he guides you along the way, frequently talking about his own life experiences and narrating examples which everyone can relate to.
A common theme that runs rough many of Ralph’s videos is the importance of gratitude. Be thankful for your family and friends. Be thankful for the life you live, knowing that people have endured worse. Be thankful that even though we are born and then we die, we have many glorious years in between to do something that matters. Be thankful for the opportunities and the setbacks, the good days and the bad, the smiles and the tears – all day and every single day.
One of my favourite videos by Ralph Smart is “5 Essential Things That Can Make Your Day More Meaningful” – it is the best pick-me-up for those days where things are going wrong, your life is feeling directionless and you are losing hope. What are the five secrets, you ask? Well, I guess you will just have to watch the video to find out, glamdolls!
What are you waiting for, ladies? Take a dive into the world of Ralph Smart and give your soul the TLC it needs!
Have you ever had a “blah” morning where you just could not be bothered styling your lovely locks? These lazy mornings happen to the best of us. When you just cannot seem to muster up the will to spend more than five minutes on your hairdo, these five hair hacks will definitely come in handy!
Greasy Hair Woes
Dry shampoo is your savior when your hair is greasy and ghastly. If you do not have any on hand, talcum powder works equally well (minus the hole in your wallet). For the best results, apply it the night before so that it can work its magic on your tresses while you sleep.
Time For A Turban
Turbans are one of the hottest trends right now and have been sported by celebrities like Eva Mendes and Kourtney Kardashian, among others. When you cannot seem to pull your hair into something that resembles a sophisticated hairstyle, simply wrap it up into a turban for an effortlessly chic look. Voila!
Casual Chic Braid
Unwashed hair? Never fear, glamdolls! Dirty hair is actually a great foundation for all sorts of braids. If you are stretched for time, the half-done braid is exactly what you need. Loosely plait your hair along your crown and towards the nape of your neck. Instead of securing it with a hair tie, leave it undone for an easy breezy vibe.
Fit For A Princess
When it comes to lackluster mornings or terrible bad-hair-days, headbands are you best friend. The Princess Roll is easily one of the most stylish dos and can be achieved in less than five minutes. Start by placing an elastic headband around the crown of your head. Now, take small sections of hair from the right side and wrap them around the band as you would wrap a ribbon around a pen. Continue wrapping until you have tucked all your hair in and give your mane a blast of hairspray to set the look.
Spice Up Your Ponytail
Ponytails are undoubtedly one of the most versatile hairstyles. The next time you are feeling lazy but need to look absolutely fabulous, spice up the ordinary look by giving it a side braid and then sweeping the rest of the hair into a ponytail. Add some extra bounce to your ponytail by boosting it with two upward facing bobby pins placed through your elastic.
Coconut oil is the secret to healthy and shiny hair. Historically, it gained prominence in the Asian subcontinent where women have been using it for centuries to achieve the beautiful dark locks that they are known for. Slowly, it spread across the globe, first to other coastal areas and later to the mainland. The popularity of coconut oil has grown rapidly and with good reason too; this magical potion is absolutely loaded with nutrients and goodness which provide your tresses with the TLC they need.
Coconut Oil Fights Dandruff
Every lady fears the onslaught of dandruff which is undoubtedly the most unsightly and annoying hair problem – wouldn’t you agree? Coconut oil is brimming with fatty acids which are the best anti-dandruff soldiers out there and infinitely more effective than the host of anti-dandruff shampoos and conditioners which line the shelves of your local drugstore. Mix coconut oil with castor oil and lukewarm water, massage this mixture into your hair and shampoo as normal after thirty minutes. Repeat this ritual twice a week for optimal results.
Coconut Oil Retains Moisture
If dry hair is your pet peeve, coconut oil is exactly what you need. The beauty of this product is that it does not break down and evaporate easily, thus locking the moisture into your hair. You will notice that you hair feels much softer and healthier after only a few applications. The moisture retention property also prevents split ends and breakage which can ruin your lovely locks. If you use coconut oil on a regular basis, feel free to bid adieu to conditioner which really is not required once you start using this magical product.
Coconut Oil Helps Styling
Most styling products do more harm than good. Whilst your hair might look stunning in the moment, it can take days for the damaged hair cells to repair themselves afterward. The next time you are trying to recreate a fancy hairstyle, switch your regular spray, gel or wax for coconut oil instead. When you apply heat to your hair, the oil will thin out and become easier to spread. When it cools down, the coconut oil will condense and hold the hairstyle in place. A few drops of coconut oil when styling can go a long way.
Glamdolls, keep an eye out for the Parachute Coconut Oil which is coming soon to Glamour House of Hair. This iconic brand combines all of the benefits of traditional coconut oil and more. It is known to make your hair grow up to three times faster and penetrates right into the inner layers of your hair.
Say goodbye to bad hair days forever!
Lately, gratitude has been the buzz word on my mind. It is so important to be thankful for your family, your friends, the food on the table, your health, your happiness and your hair. Yes, I said hair.
Glamdolls, did you know that almost two per cent of the American population suffers from a crippling disease known as “alopecia areata”? This unfortunate form of hair loss is an autoimmune disease, that is, one in which the body that produces antibodies begins to attack its own cells, leading to the destruction of the tissue in question. In the case of alopecia, the immune system targets the hair follicles.
Contradictory to popular belief, hair loss is not strictly a male disease. Alopecia is most common amongst teenagers and those in their early twenties; however it can occur in people of all ages and races irrespective of their gender. Of course, hereditary factors play a major role as well – one out of five patients has at least one more family member with alopecia too.
It typically makes its presence known with one or two small round patches as clumps of hair begin to fall out. In some cases, the hair may break off, leaving short rough stubs instead. As the hair grows back, it may fall out from somewhere else. Sometimes, nails are the first symptom to emerge because alopecia tends to make talons pitted, rough and thin. More often than not, the hair loss is temporary as alopecia usually subsides in about a year; however, there are certain rare cases where the hair follicles are never able to rebuild themselves. Alopecia is permanent in about 10% of people diagnosed with the condition.
The bad news is that alopecia cannot be cured. The good news is that it can be treated to quicken the recovery process and encourage hair to grow again. The most common medicines are those which suppress the immune system and encourage the regrowth of hair, usually in the form of injections, creams, lotions and ointments. Most doctors prescribe two treatments to boost the success rate however it is absolutely critical that you understand the side effects before jumping on the wagon.
The most sensitive issue that comes with alopecia is not the hair loss itself, but the emotional toll that comes with it. It is always a good idea to join a support group of likeminded people who are going or have been through what you are experiencing now. They will give you the strength to keep on moving forward in the face of tough times. As someone wise once said, “It is not what I have been through in my life that defines who I am. It is how I got through it that has made me the person I am today.”
Chin up, buttercup.
To my mind, online shopping definitely takes the cake for invention of the century! Despite the obvious advantage of convenience, many ladies still hesitate to take the plunge and are often disappointed when they do so. Never fear – these five tips will make the process much more pleasurable and far less painful!
Use the Size Guide
Seriously! The problem with online shopping is that you will never know whether their clothes run larger, smaller or true to size. Instead of taking a random guess, refer to the size guide to save you the hassle of returns and refunds. Obviously, you must have an accurate set of measurements on hand to make use of the size guide. It is always a good idea to have someone help you out with this to ensure that your recordings are spot on. In the rarity that the website does not have a size guide, try to get the low-down on sizing by past customers with a quick internet search.
Find Yourself Some Coupons
When I first started shopping online, I had no idea how fruitful it could be, not only because of the convenience factor, but also because of the moolah I managed to save by taking advantage of discount coupons. There are a host of coupon websites where you can find discount codes for all of your favourite online retailers. Do not forget to check out the stores’ social media feeds for promotional codes as well. Ten minutes of careful investigation can go a long way, possibly getting you those black heels you have been eyeing for months at 20% off. Sounds like a pretty good deal to me!
Search Multiple Sites
Glamdolls, I am sure that you will agree when I say that nothing is more disappointing than buying something, only to discover that the same thing is available at another store for ten dollars less. The same applies to online shopping as well. With the sheer number of online stores that have been born in recent years, it goes without saying that many of them carry products which are very similar, if not identical. Have you ever heard of price discovery websites? Use them. You are welcome.
Always Read the Reviews
Before you hit the tempting “add to cart” button, please, please, PLEASE spend five minutes reading reviewers from customers. These titbits of information can tell you a lot about the product which may not be visible on the website. Perhaps the fabric used it that stunning black dress creases far too easily or those palazzo pants are actually bright red instead of the lovely orange they appear to be in the photographs. Plus, if you are on the fence about purchasing something, a read through the reviews can be a great way to take the decision.
Understand the Return Policy
When it comes to online shopping, you are not going to hit the bullseye every time. There will be times when you have to return an item because it was damaged in transit, does not fit or simply is not what you imagined it would be. That is why it is absolutely critical that you have a quick glance at the return policy before indulging in some digital retail therapy. Many online retailers have a limited time for exchanges and returns, usually asking the customer to bear the brunt of the shipping costs. More often than not, items on sale are not even returnable so that money just goes down the drain. To avoid wasting your precious time and hard earned dollars, get the low-down on the return policy before you begin browsing.
In between trying to strike the ultimate work-life balance and looking fiercely fashionable as you do so, how much time do you make for yourself? In all probability, you answer will be: not enough or nothing at all. Know that when you prioritize yourself, you automatically prioritize happiness. Here are a few ways to put you back on your priority list, preferably at numero uno:
Start Claiming Your Me-Time
If I do not get at least ten minutes to myself each and every day, I simply cannot function. You need to make a conscious effort to allow yourself some alone time to reflect, reboot and reenergize. Use this time to reconnect with yourself. Think about how you have been feeling, analyse your emotions and attempt to decode those odd mood swings. Think about what you need – it could be love, care, money, stability, a better job or even a change of country. Remember that this time will only be productive if you are completely honest with yourself. Think about how you are going to achieve your goals and make an action plan in your head. If thinking is too much of an effort, just enjoy the feeling of sitting in silence. Revel in the peace. A great way to schedule this critical me-time is to centre it on a relaxing activity like yoga, bubble baths or exercise.
Everyone is allowed their indulgences so why are you skimping on yours? Make time to treat yourself to something special once in a while. Here are a few ideas to get your started: prepare a delicious Italian meal for yourself with a glass of wine to boot, catch the band you have been dying to watch while they are touring in your city, go for a movie alone, take yourself out to lunch, join Zumba classes and buy a cute exercise outfit for the occasion, book a spa date with your best girlfriends or go alone, snap up that sweet smelling perfume with a ridiculous price tag, have your hair cut and coloured, eat two slices of cake instead of one.
Learn To Say No
Glamdolls, are you guilty of being unable to decline? Well, today is the day that you will accept that turning down an offer, party or person is perfectly okay. If you want to put yourself back on the priority list, the pesky habit of saying yes to everything has got to go. It is very easy to overextend and promise more than you can give. Many of us do so without even realizing it, only to find ourselves in a tight spot a few days later. The simply remedy is to just say no in the first place – do it with a smile, polite tone of voice and nobody gets hurt. Use this time do something that brings a smile to your face or simply catch up on that ever growing sleep deficit. You do not need approval from anyone else; you are your own permission slip.
Glamdolls, do you have some top-secret beauty tricks in your arsenal which help you go from drab to diva quickly? To save time on your hair and makeup whilst still achieving model-like results, add these ten genius titbits to the list, too!
No More Lipstick on Teeth
Nothing is more embarrassing then heading out on the town, only to realise that you have bright red lipstick smeared on your teeth when you return home. Rid yourself of this problem by sticking your finger in your mouth after you have swiped on your lipstick, and then swiftly pulling it out. Your finger will take care of the extra product which would have otherwise ended up on your pearly whites.
Bobby pins are an essential part of your hairstyling kit. Try spritzing them with hairspray for a better hold.
Make Your Eye Shadow Pop
One of the easiest ways to really bring out the colour of your favourite eye shadow is to use a layer of white below it. Once you have concealed and primed your lids, dust on a light layer of white eye shadow followed by the coloured one. It will enhance the vibrancy of the shade, making your eyes pop like never before!
When you get out of the shower after washing your hair, never, ever rub your hair to dry it. This will only lead to frizz which will be cumbersome to deal with later. Pat your hair gently instead to rid your tresses of extra moisture.
Conceal In Triangles
The problem of under-eye dark circles has plagued ladies for centuries! As you know, one of the easiest ways to banish this problem is to use concealer with a red undertone to combat the blue. What you probably didn’t know is that your concealer should be applied in a downward triangle shade (not dotted) for the ultimate coverage.
Dry Shampoo Emergency
So, your hair is greasy beyond belief, you do not have the time to wash it before work and your trusted dry shampoo is over – what do you do? Dust a little bit of talcum powder into your roots, of course! It is just as effective as dry shampoo and so much cheaper!
DIY Gel Liner
If you are craving a smouldering look and extra definition for your eyes, gel liner is the way to go. Whilst you may not have it on hand, it is very easy to create your own from eyeliner pencil. Simply hold the tip over a flame for two seconds and then let it cool for fifteen seconds before applying it to your lid. Say hello to an intense, long-lasting smudge!
For beautiful curls without the damage caused by the heat of a curling iron, loosely braid your wet hair before you sleep. In the morning, undo the braids, spritz on some texturizing spray and you are good to go.
Make Your Lippy Last
This nifty trick will make your favourite lip colour last for hours on end! Once you have applied the shade of your choice, lightly place a tissue over your smackers and dust some powder over them to set the product in place. You’re welcome, glamdolls!
Twisted Bun in Two Minutes
Who said it isn’t possible to create a sophisticated hairdo in less than two minutes? To create a classy twisted bun, simply divide your hair into two low ponytails and secure with elastic. Braid the ponytails, then wrap them together and secure them at the base of your head with bobby pins. Voila!
